5th Annual Beach Mile Pier Run

9:30am Sunday August 16, 2009—White Rock, BC

The 5th Annual Beach Mile Pier Run started at 9:30am on West Beach.

This mile race is run on the famous White Rock beach at low tide. Competitors are encouraged to have fun running in their most natural state: i.e. barefoot and with minimal clothing. The idea for this run was inspired by the movement in the running industry to 'less is better' as far as footwear is concerned.

The course will be run on semi-firm sand at low tide and will be starting on the beach just west of the bottom of Oxford St in White Rock. The course will be in the shape of a U, finishing near the start line.

Cost for this event is $0 in keeping with the minimalist theme. However donations to Ocean Athletics Track Club are encouraged.

No pre-registration is required and there will be no post-race awards. Just come and run "free" and enjoy this most unique experience.

As in 2008, we have decided to give anyone who comes out to the beach mile 15% off everything in the store that day. This would be a great opportunity to do some back to school shopping and replace your old runners before Cross Country starts up again.

This offer is only valid on the day of the race, August 16th, and cannot be used on any sale item or in combination with any other promotion. The store is open from 12–5, so you might want to consider just hanging out at the beach until it opens.

If you have any questions or concerns please call Ryan, Nigel or Phil at the White Rock store: 604-531-7879.

Please note that while this is a minimalist run it is NOT a nude run... some clothing must be worn!

2005 Event Report

Monday morning August 1st 2005, 30 barefooted runners took to White Rock's west beach to run the 1st annual Beach Mile Pier Run. Peninsula Runners hosted this unique event which required runners to navigate between a series of gates set out along the beach. Runners enjoyed the sandy course which sometimes crossed through shallow water or over some slippery seaweed.

Quickest to finish the challenging course was Phil Ellis of White Rock in 5 minutes and 5 seconds after a tight battle with Ryan Keigher. 53-year-old World masters record holder Maureen de St Croix was the first lady finishing in 6:27, two seconds ahead of 400 metre specialist Erin Payne.
