The inaugural Free Run was an overwhelming success. The most beautiful day of 2012 was the backdrop for the initial race that had nothing but positive feedback. The race raised $2,000 for the BC Cancer Society and had just under 500 runners. It's impressive that 500 people had no idea where they were racing when they were emailed on Tuesday that Beacon Hill would host the event.
Jeremy Lawrence won the men's race in 18:23. Riley McQueen won the women's race in 19:36. Participants said the course was a slow and fast course. “I wanted to come up with a course that beat people up, I didn't want it to be easy” said race director Dave Milne. He designed the course to be a “fun, relentless course with a tough finish.”
The most interesting fact about the event is that it was free! There was no cost to participate. Similar races cost roughly $25-$35. This was designed to be a race that anyone could participate in. When asked about the “free” aspect, Milne said “I wanted a race where people could just come and have fun. No pressure. The next event will be during the Olympics.” Interestingly, one of the last races Milne ran was just before he retired in 2005. Milne is still ranked in the Top 10 in Canada in the 3000 metre Steeplechase.
The evening was a total success as over 200 participants headed back to the Office Restaurant and enjoyed all the post race festivities. The only disappointment was that the Canucks lost and could only get 2 goals. The deal between the sponsor and the participants was that for every goal the Canucks scored there was a draw for a pair of Nike Frees.
Stay tuned for the next event. When asked on the way out, Milne said the next one is in the planning stages and will be “taken up a notch.”

Join us at 6:15pm this Friday at Beacon Hill Park. We have moved the start to 6:15 because of the Canucks game. We will be meeting at the all weather field at Beacon Hill Park. It's across the street from the Beacon Hill Drive In. Click map to enlarge.
There will be a clock so you can see your result but there will be no results. When you cross the finish line, head directly to the Office Lounge (http://theofficelounge.ca/). They are located at 759 Yates St. We will be in the VIP room and the Canucks game will be on a huge 6 foot HD screen. Every time the Canucks score, we will be giving away a pair of Nike Frees! Carlsberg will be on Special, $5 Appies and the band Greenlaw will be playing at 9pm. There is no reason not to come.
Donations for the BC Cancer Foundation will be accepted at the Office. Donations cannot be made at Beacon Hill.
