Event News

A message from the race director:
May 25/09: Wow! I would like to start by saying thank you to all the volunteers and my staff. What a Half Marathon presentation they put on Sunday morning. The participation was awesome and the community support was unreal. What an enjoyable day and event and thank you all for your support for 5 years. While I am excited about the direction of the race I am aware of a few issues that arose on Sunday. We need more shirts, water, washrooms, faster food and in 2010 we will be using Chip Timing. However, these are all things for us to worry about for next year. Simply put, we are so proud of the Oak Bay KOOL Half Marathon and we really hope you enjoyed it! Feel free to touch base with us and give us any suggestions and ways to make the event better. We don't pretend to know everything, we just try really hard to put on events that make the running community proud. Congratulations to Jim Finlayson and Cheryl Murphy on their continued success on the Oak Bay course. Thank you to Help Fill A Dream for the amazing support and hope that the running community can help you solve bigger issues and make Victoria a better place. Thank you to all, the relay shirts situation will be solved ASAP and those who didn't get the correct shirt size can keep close so after I deal with the relay shirts those extra shirts will be available. Thank you and see you at the Esquimalt 8km on July 28th!

Akasha and Jamie May 24, 2009: Everyone enters the Peninsula Runners Oak Bay KOOL Half Marathon for a reason and each of the 1100 plus runners who completed the event this year had a story to tell. One extraordinary account was that of the final two runners to cross the finish line. Twenty year old Jamie Cormier and Akasha Motchman have been friends for over 10 years. When Jamie saw an ad for the race on television and decided he wanted to run, he begged his good friend to join him. There's nothing out of the ordinary about that except that Jamie had a liver transplant at 10 months of age and has battled his health all his life. He has had to undergo numerous surgical procedures over the years... the last one in April of this year! What motivated him was that The Help Fill A Dream Foundation, the race's charity partner, had sent Jamie to Disneyland in 1996 and he wanted to give something back to them. He knew that the Foundation benefited from the race and he wanted to help another young person with a life-threatening illness have their dream fulfilled. It took Jamie and Akasha 6 hours and 16 minutes to cross the finish line and receive their medals... together, as strong, supportive friends. We think that is pretty remarkable! It embodies human perseverance, courage and compassion that our charity, Help Fill a Dream represents in fulfilling the dreams of children in need of support.
