2012 Series Reports

Campbell Valley Stomp Jan 22

Ok, it's 2:00pm and I'm sitting at home trying to look out the window but I can't see because of all the rain. And we thought it was bad at 9:00am. Turns out it was great then, calm, dry and just a little blanket of snow — that was frozen solid in a few places.

The Campbell Valley Stomp went off without a problem — almost — biggest challenge was a few icy patches here and there. The parking lots were "mean" — and a number of runners fell there. The rest of us navigated around the course — a little slower than normal perhaps — but we did it!

No records were set but all runners had a great time. And there was a new MC at the awards — nice job Paul! Once again, thanks to all the sponsors who make the trail series possible especially Ben from Mizuno for all the help he provides.

Overall Men's 10K winner was Mike Murphy of Maple Ridge who ran a 40:46 and the Women's winner was Corinne Issel of White Rock in 51:52. The overall wins in the 5K were by two young runners: Callum Pilgrim of Abbotsford for the women in 26:15 and Christian Gravel of Vancouver in 19:40 for the men.

Congratulations to all who finished and we'll see you:

The first day of a New Year !! — and once again the hardy were at Crescent Park, some earlier than others. By 9:00 Phil and Ben had the course set up and everything was ready to go at 10:00.

As 10:00 approached the runners arrived, some pre-registered and others registering. The lines were long but Lisa and her team got everyone processed resulting in hundreds of happy runners!

At 10:00 the weather was GREAT — warm with a bit of a breeze and no sign of rain! Everyone lined up and Phil reviewed the course and at the usual "5, 4, 3, 2, 1, GO" runners were off. The course was well marked — even the rocks were painted white — and in great shape with minimum mud and slime. Two laps around and the run was done.

Congratulations to all the runners, age and "door" prize winners. Overall M/F winners were Rob Durrant and Darbykai Standrick in 30:10 and 32:53 respectively.

Rumour had it that some hearty souls were headed off to Crescent Beach for the Polar bear swim! Thanks to all runners, and especially the organizers, Coastal Athletics and sponsors — Mizuno in particular — as a perfect run was ended and runners looked forward to the Campbell Valley Stomp:

Aldergrove Mud Run Feb 27

Ok so there was no mud in sight. In fact, all one could see was white. A few cold days and then it warms up — a recipe for snow. It looked beautiful but turned a challenging course into a difficult one. If you were following Jeremiah, and who wasn'’t, you knew where the course went. You couldn't see the hidden obstacles and it was a little slippery at the bottom of some of the downhills — especially those that were followed by a quick turn, but it's trail running.

The first hint of things to come was driving down the road to the parking lot — yes it is steep, thus slippery requiring one to slow up. At precisely 0905 the enthusiastic crowd got off to a fine start, missing the curb and post, they quickly found the snow was going to make things more difficult. Down, around the “lake” and beside the finish and up the hill onto “Pepin Brook.” Around and up to the “backside” and onto “Rocking Horse” where it got more difficult with a few “undulations” and a steep little hill — gasp! Then up and around, down past the lake (again) and over the bridge to the finish — phew.

Ok get your time and then get warm. Door and age group prizes were awarded (by Ryan and Paul Williams) along with a grand draw prize to Mike Ridley!

A chilly good time was had by all as the 2011 Trail Running Series came to a close. Thanks to all who participated in, set up and supported the series — especially the sponsors — MIZUNO and Peninsula Runners.

In two weeks the 1st Annual Golden Ears Half Marathon and 10K will be held. Check in store or the website for details.

Houston Trail Run Feb 6

Another PERFECT day for a trail run — overcast, raining and cool! Best of all it was a well groomed trail that MOST runners really appreciated. In the 10K the fastest man was Travis Fraser in a time of 38.30 while the top woman was Darbykai Standrick with a 41.52 clocking. The 5K run saw another excellent run from young Callum Pilgrim to come home first overall in a time of 20.58 inspite of a one minute penalty due to taking a wrong corner near the end. All in all, it was a great time and the hot coffee, food and prizes, were much appreciated. We had a record number of finishers this year with 187, up from last year's 155.

The final run is at Aldergrove Lake Feb 27th at 0900 — that's 9am, try to be there early so the race can start on time, at the picnic area beside the main parking lot off 8th Ave just past 272nd. See you there — pre-registered! Rember anyone who has finished two of the runs so far is still in the running to win the draw for a $400 Mizuno prize package to someone who completes three of the four races.

Campbell Valley Stomp Jan 23

It was a near perfect day to run if you like the trails. Overcast, warm and wet! The runners turned out in large numbers to test their mettle against the park.

At just after 9 o'clock runners assembled at the start and the course was described. It was well marked and runners were warned that there was some “water on the course” and that they “would get wet.” The first part of the run was uneventful — even pleasant — but along Vine Maple Trail it got ugly. Yes, there was water and a fair amount — the prize being one “puddle” that seemed to be knee deep with a slippery muddy bottom. Emerging from the water runners were greeted with metres of slippery mud then on to the gravel trail — up the steep hill and for 5k runners the finish. For those fortunate to be doing 10k, another trip around and through the “puddles” again before the finish.

In the end a good time was had by all — some collected prizes and all marvelled at how wet and cold their feet were.

Next run Houston Trail run at Derby Reach Feb 6!

Resolution Run Jan 1

New Year's Day 2011 was sunny and cold with race temperature of -2°C. The course was clearly marked and had a skim of snow on the open fields. The trails were clear and firm. The record crowd of 241 runners had a fun time on the challenging but fun route. Jordan Mara of Surrey finished in a spectacular time of 26:15, just 8 seconds short of the race record run by Ryan Hayden in 2008. This year Ryan finished in second spot with a time of 27.54 while the women's winner was Charlene Janzen of Langley with a time of 34:57. A couple of performances of note were the fine run by Lenore Montgomery at age 80 in 52:38 and Abbotsford's Callum Pilgrim running 38:28 at age 13. The runners departed quickly before the cold set in and before the final age category winners were announced. They were as follows:

F19 & under Johanna Persson 19 F Surrey 36:43
F20-39 Charlene Janzen 38 F Langley 34:57

F60-69 Frances O'Grady 62 F White Rock 47:04
