They have put in countless hours in preparation for this event. As we are less than 24 hours away from this day, it is important that they be excused from any domestic or other duties or expectations that might distract them from their mental preparations for this race. While both the individual and the coaching staff from Peninsula Runners acknowledge your contribution in the support of the athlete, these last 24 hours require your ongoing support in carrying whatever might be the individual athlete's usual responsibilities. In the days post marathon, your continued support is required in order to help the athlete recover from the tremendous efforts that they expended during the race. You can expect some sort of normalcy to return in approximately 7 days post event. Thank you for your cooperation and continued support of your athlete. Peninsula Runners Marathon Clinic For spouses: letter to your marathoning partner123 Lonely Street October 6, 2007 To whom it may concern, Re: Preparations for the Royal Victoria Marathon During the last several months, {insert your name here} has been supporting you in your preparation for the Royal Victoria Marathon. While you have been putting in countless hours in preparation for this event, I have patiently listened to concerns regarding short runs, long runs, sweat, blisters, pacing and chafing. While you have been training, doing long runs and short, checking the internet for the latest information on fartleks and reading the stack of bedside tomes on running your best, I have been putting in double duty {check those that apply}:
As we are less than 24 hours away from this day, I promise to continue to offer my support despite your concerns regarding your shoes, socks, hat (or no hat), shorts or long pants, long sleeves or short, what to eat and where to apply Bodyglide (although I have a good suggestion of what I'd like to see lubricated and where to put it). Over the past week I have also politely listened and dismissed the possibility of your oncoming cold, flu, asthma, stroke or ebola preventing you from running in the upcoming race. In the 7 days post marathon, I will continue to support you to help you recover from the tremendous efforts that you expended during the race. I will watch with concern when you go up and down stairs. I will want to cry when I see your blisters, toenails and bleeding nipples. I will listen to your minute by minute, step by step account of October 7, 2007 with rapt interest (OK, with interest). I will not protest when you talk about your "next" marathon. But most of all, I will express, with all sincerity, how proud I am of you. Yours sincerely, P.S. By the way, on the 8th day post-marathon, I will be re-assigning to you your pre-marathon training household duties! |
