If you would like to make a financial donation please contact Dave at Peninsula Runners or www.equal-opportunity.ca. Peninsula Runners is now accepting those shoes and balls! You'll see another long-time clinic member, Daphne Panter, attended the race as well. Everyone had a great time and we look forward to putting more people on that start line next year. 19 Questions with Steve Osaduik
Oct 18/06: David Milne of Peninsula Runners sat down with Royal Victoria Marathon winner and record-breaker Steve Osaduik (2:16:47) to ask him a few questions about his race and his goals. Why not 20 questions? Give the guy a break, he just ran a marathon. How confident were you before the race? What was the defining moment in your training when you knew this goal was
obtainable? How many miles per week have you been running over the past 6 months? How long have you been training for this race? Overall how did the race go? Were you nervous? How long did you warm up for? What did you have before the race to eat? Did you get blisters? Chafing? How fast was your first mile? How fast was your last? Did you cool down afterwards? If there was one piece of advice you could give someone else in the race,
what would it be? Who has been your biggest supporter? How many people would you have in your support staff? How good does it feel to have obtained your goals? What are your next goals? Are you going to be on the start line in Beijing? What is it going to take? Osaduik breaks 25-year record at RVM
Oct 9/06: He does it! The 25-year Royal Victoria Marathon record that seemed to be safe was shattered by the Island's most recognizable runner Steve Osaduik on Sunday. His time of 2:16:47 puts him first in the Canadian marathon rankings and shines more light on Steve's dream of representing Canada at the Olympics in 2008. read story on AIMS site Above right: Royal Victoria Marathon champion Steve Osaduik talks running shoes with Shana, his first customer at Peninsula Runners. Team Amazingrunners Run for the Cure
Oct 2/06: Congratulations and a big thank you to Team Amazingracers running Oct. 1, 2006 in the Run for the Cure, the annual national event in support of breast cancer research. Their contribution made a difference; great job everyone! (click photo to enlarge) First annual ACDSee Tour De Rock 5km and 3km a great successSep 14/06: It was a great first event. Race Director Chris Kelsall got through all the kinks
of putting on a new event and when the running ended it was Steve Osaduik crossing the line as
he usually does—in first! Roughly $1600 was raised for Cops For Cancer and 234 runners
participated. A special thanks to Schneider Electric for making the largest contribution to
the field with 150 athletes. Also thank you to Adidas for generous prize donations. Émilie Mondor dies in car accidentSep 10/06: "Émilie will always be remembered for her ability to make other people feel good about themselves. She was a very kind person who always thought of other people first. I usually got to see Émilie only a few times a year, and every time she was always asking how other people's lives were doing first. I really respected that. In a sport that is so selfish and competitive, she brought a nice element to the track. She will be missed." — Dave Milne Kirsten Sweetland wins the World Junior Triathlon Championships in Switzerland
Sep 4/06: The girl who dons the Nike Peninsula Runners gear made everyone proud when she conquered her demons from the 2006 race, and won gold for Canada. Sweetland broke a 15-year drought for Canadian Athletes at the World Triathlon Championships. Interestingly, the 2005 version of the race had much disappointment for Sweetland—she collapsed with 100 metres to go and ended up with an IV in her arm. On Saturday the gutsy Victorian crossed the line with her arms in the air and set her sights on the 2008 Olympic Team. Race highlights, photos and interview. See additional photos with Kirsten's bio. We at Peninsula Runners are so proud of Kirsten and will hopefully have many pictures of the race and event when she returns from Switzerland. If you have any questions or comments for Kirsten please feel free to forward them to peninsularunners@telus.net. Dave to Challenge Ironman in 2007Sep 1/06: After a week in Penticton the motivation has returned for Dave Milne. He will attempt to hoist himself back into the mode of training that carried him to Peninsula Runners. After 8 months of dealing with a knee injury that kept him from running pain-free, Dave has finally made the decision he knew was always coming; to get off his feet and onto the bike and in a pool for the majority of his training. The goal will be to beat his business partner in the Victoria store, Paul Williams, and Keith Nicoll who is the co-owner of North Shore Athletics store. The race should be interesting—Williams held most of the Canadian distance running records for years in the 80's and early 90's. Nicoll is the only one to complete the Ironman and has done a few. Milne has no swimming background and is just as challenged on the bike. The race should be exciting and the next year of training should be fun to watch! Good luck boys! Osaduik breaks own course record in Esquimalt 8kJuly 30/06—Steve Osaduik marked his debut as a Peninsula Runners athlete with a major statement. In preparation for the National Half Marathon Championships (Aug 13th), Osaduik ran the Esquimalt 8km in 23:59, improving on his own course record of 24:10. The 2008 Beijing Olympics are quickly approaching and Osaduik will only keep improving in order to meet the difficult qualification standards. The first woman to cross the finish line was Kirsty Smith, training with the National Triathlon Centre. The ex-track specialist has moved from running to train for triathlon, but she ran an impressive race finishing the 8k in 27:55. She set a new course record by over 2 minutes. The men's Masters winner was Paul O'Callaghan, who also won the draw for the Mountain Bike from Marty's Mountain Cycle. The women's Masters winner was Roberta Tower from the Apex running club. The Esquimalt 8km had 249 finishers, setting a new participation record for the second year of the event. The weather cooperated and the sun appeared around the half-way mark of the race. Surprising showers all morning had runners and organizers concerned about the prospect of fast times, but it ended up being a perfect 15 degrees. Thanks again to everyone who participated. Peninsula Runners would also like to thank all of the sponsors and the best race director in the world. Thank You Marty Pearce for your countless hours and devotion to making these events great for runners of all levels! The race generated $1300 for the Rock Solid Foundation who provide an important service for youth in our communities. Way to go! Steve Osaduik makes debut as a Peninsula Runners athlete
July 28/06—This Sunday marks the beginning of a new relationship. Steve Osaduik will make his debut as a Peninsula Runners athlete in the Esquimalt 8k. Vancouver Island's most recognisable runner will be sporting a new singlet and a new attitude while he attempts to defend his title. He will use this weekend's event to prepare for the National Half Marathon Championships in Edmonton. This weekend's race will be a huge challenge for Steve, as he will have 2-time British Olympian Jon Brown to complete against. The action starts at 9am out of the Esquimalt Recreation Centre and concludes around 10am with a pancake breakfast. Proceeds from the race will go to support the Rock Solid Foundation. Hole in One for Lance DavisJuly 22/06—Long time Clinic member Lance Davis stole the show at the Cedar Hill Golf Course on July 22nd. The course, known as "The Rock", didn't give Lance any trouble today when he aced his tee shot on the tricky 4th hole. The pin was in the front middle and the tees way at the back and that wasn't enough to keep Davis' 9 iron from one hopping into the left side of the cup. Peninsula Runners would like to wish Duane, Henry and Tina all the best in their new adventureJuly 2006—Long time run club member Duane Woods has to leave the group. Tina has accepted a great new position and will continue her masters in London, Ontario. As one of the original 5 people to join the new store's run club in 2004, Peninsula Runners is grateful to Duane for sticking it out and letting the run club grow into the "Shelbourne Army" it is today. In his new running career Duane has become an accomplished runner. He now holds excellent personal bests in the half marathon and the marathon. He ran Vancouver last year with a new half marathon PB of 1:37.12. He followed that up with the Royal Victoria Marathon in 3:29:32. Duane will always be remembered for his hard work and commitment. We are so proud of Duane and wish him and his family all the best in their new life. Eric Kiauka runs 2000m personal best in EuropeJuly 15/06—Eric Kiauka shone last night in Europe. After a bittersweet first race where he placed 4th in a 3000m steeplechase, he returned to form in a rare 2000m flat race. He ran a personal best 5:15. It was his first 2km race ever, so not knowing what to expect but pain, he got the results he wanted. Averaging 63's for 5 laps will set him up to compete very well in his next race. Good work Eric! Trevor O'Brien runs 1500m in BelgiumJuly 2006—Local elite middle distance runner Trevor O'Brien ran his first 1500m race in his tour around Europe in Belgium on July 1st. He placed 10th in the field running a time of 3:45.16. The meet was the Leon Buyle Memorial in Belgium. The winner of the race was Bob Winter of the Netherlands in 3:41.02. The American, Alan Webb was also in the field and ran 3:46.14. It was his first race back since his hamstring injury that had him sidelined for most of the early parts of the season. Malindi Elmore of Calgary also ran a respectable 2:04.68 in the womens 800m (ninth place). Thank you to Life Force Systems BootcampJuly 2006—Peninsula Runners would like to thank Life Force Systems Bootcamp for inviting us to help and inform their athletes with a quick and fun shoe talk. March 10, 2006 Phyllis Martin is at present in training for her upcoming walk of the Island which she plans to undertake in June of 2006. The over 500km walk is to help to bring awareness of Tourettes Syndrome and to educate the public. Phyllis has a grandson who suffers from Tourettes and she would like people to be more understanding and tolerant of this condition which affects 1 in 100 people, most of whom are not aware that they have it. To the individuals who have the more complex type of Tourettes, as does Phyllis' grandson, life can be very difficult. This is especially so in youngsters whose self-esteem and self confidence can be destroyed.
Phyllis is an extraordinary person who has an in-ordinate amount of compassion. Peninsula Runners and Brooks is proud to support Phyllis on her walk from one end of Vancouver Island to the other. Her task is not easy... it's 500 plus kilometres and will require a daily average of 30 to 40 kilometres. The journey will begin the first weekend of June and will take somewhere around 2 weeks. Please feel free to follow along with our training updates and join in with Phyllis at any point to support the walk against Tourettes... please feel free to contact Dave at Peninsula Runners. Times Colonist 10k 2006Congratulations to all those who completed the Times Colonist 10k!
...and our congratulations and apologies to anyone we missed.
